Costa Rica is the kind of place that makes big moments feel bigger. Golden light spilling across the Pacific, waves rolling in behind you, lush Guanacaste greenery framing the scene, and one very important question about to change everything.
It's no wonder Costa Rica engagement photos and surprise proposal photoshoots have become such a popular way to capture the start of your next big chapter. But great beach engagement photos take more planning than simply showing up with a ring and hoping Mother Nature understands the assignment.
Here's everything you need to know.

First things first: these are two slightly different photoshoots.
A traditional engagement photoshoot in Costa Rica happens after the proposal. You both know why you’re there, can plan outfits together, choose a location you love, and turn it into a beautiful experience.
A surprise proposal beach photoshoot requires a little more stealth.
Your photographer will help you choose the best location and time, decide exactly where to stand, create a believable plan to get your partner there, and position themselves discreetly enough to capture the moment without giving everything away.
Once the question has been asked and the shock, tears, laughter, or enthusiastic jumping has subsided, the shoot can transition into an engagement session.
One moment. Two reasons to celebrate. Plenty of photos.

Not all beaches photograph the same way.
From Tamarindo and Playa Grande to Avellanas, Playa Flamingo, Conchal, and beyond, Guanacaste offers wildly different backdrops within a relatively small stretch of coastline. You'll find everything from expansive golden beaches to secluded coves, dramatic rocks, tropical greenery, tide pools, and rugged stretches of Pacific coastline.
Start by considering how you want your photos to feel.
Classic and romantic? A wide beach with an unobstructed sunset works beautifully.
More dramatic? Think rocks, cliffs, or crashing waves.
Wild and unmistakably Costa Rican? Look for a tucked-away stretch where tropical greenery spills almost all the way to the sand.
Like any Costa Rica portrait session, location matters, but it matters most for surprise proposals. Your photographer should consider privacy, crowds, tides, accessibility, lighting, and where they can position themselves without looking suspiciously interested in your romantic beach walk.
Working with The Social Scene makes planning significantly easier because this is our wheelhouse. We know the area like the back of our hand and love matching the territory to your vibe.

If there is one thing to remember when planning a beach engagement photoshoot, make it this:
Midday is not your friend.
Costa Rica’s tropical sun can be intense. Shooting around noon often means harsh shadows, squinting, shiny skin, and wondering why nobody warned you it would feel approximately one thousand degrees.
Instead, schedule your session around golden hour, especially the hour leading up to sunset. The softer light flatters most skin tones and creates that warm, dreamy quality associated with tropical beach engagement photography.
Tides matter too.
Low tide can reveal reflective sand, rocks, and tide pools, while high tide can dramatically change certain beaches or make particular locations inaccessible.
For surprise proposals, timing needs to be even more precise. You don’t want to arrive 30 minutes late and discover your carefully selected proposal spot has disappeared beneath the Pacific.
Good news! No single season is “the best season” for engagement photography in Costa Rica. There are simply different looks.
Guanacaste’s dry season, December to April, typically offers sunnier days, golden landscapes, and more predictable conditions. However, it’s also high season, so popular beaches can be busier.
Green season, May to November, brings lush vegetation, dramatic skies, fewer crowds, and some spectacular sunsets.
Yes, it might rain.
No, your photos are not automatically doomed.
Costa Rican weather can change quickly, so flexibility and local knowledge matter. A photographer familiar with the area can help determine whether those ominous clouds mean “wait ten minutes” or “perhaps today is not our day.”

If you’re planning your engagement photos together, choose clothing that feels like you.
Lightweight fabrics, linen, relaxed dresses, skirts, and pieces with movement photograph beautifully on the beach. Neutral and earthy tones complement Costa Rica’s tropical landscapes, but color can be equally striking.
Coordinate without matching. You’re getting married, not forming a pop duo.
Avoid distracting logos, tiny busy patterns, and anything you’ll constantly need to adjust.
If the photoshoot includes a surprise proposal, however, controlling your partner’s wardrobe without raising suspicion can require creativity.
Dinner reservations, a sunset cocktail, or “let’s take a nice photo while we’re on vacation” can all be perfectly reasonable excuses to dress up a little.
If either of you says, “We’re awkward in photos,” your photographer has probably heard it 400 times.
Good beach portraits should feel natural, not overly staged.
Expect walking, talking, laughing, dancing, sitting together, playing near the water, and plenty of movement. Your photographer will provide direction while leaving enough space for your actual relationship to show through.
For surprise proposals, there’s an added advantage: the first moments require zero posing whatsoever.
They’re real.
Afterward, your photographer can guide you into a relaxed portrait session while the excitement is still fresh.
For a planned engagement session, keep things simple. Bring water, a small towel, a brush or comb, and perhaps a second outfit if your session allows time.
Want champagne, flowers, a picnic, surfboards, your dog, or another meaningful detail? Talk to your photographer beforehand.
For surprise proposals, planning those extras in advance matters even more. You may need to place flowers, champagne, décor, or other details before you arrive without your partner seeing them.
And unless it’s part of the setup, leave the giant beach bag behind. Nothing says romance quite like Photoshop having to remove your backpack from 37 photos.

Whether the ring is already comfortably on someone’s finger or currently hidden somewhere causing one person tremendous anxiety, the photographer you choose matters.
An experienced engagement and proposal photographer understands more than cameras. They know the beaches, tides, sunsets, weather patterns, crowds, and logistics that can make or break a coastal shoot.
Most importantly, they know how to capture the experience without making it feel like a production.
